알아두면 좋은 일상 영어 표현 ("적절한 시기를 노리다","상황이 진정되면","몸을 사리다","묵묵히 할 일을 하다","기회가 생겼을 때","며칠 생각해보다")

유용한 유튜브 영상이 있어서 간단히 예문과 함께 정리해보았다:)

 

1. Bide one's time : 적절한 타이밍을 기다리다, to wait for a favorable opportunity

<예문> 

• He played it really smart. He didn't rush into it. He bided his time and just when the timing was right, he made his move. 
• I wanted to sell the rest of the stocks, but I bided my time.

 

2. Sleep on it : 일단은 시간을 갖고 생각해보다 (오늘/지금 당장 결정하거나 말할 필요는 없을 때) 

<예문>

• You don't have to decide anything now. Why don't you just sleep on it tonight and tell me what you think in the morning. 
• I'm just going to sleep on it over this weekend and I'll decide next week. 

 

3. Strike when the iron is hot : 지금 기회가 생겼을 때 ~~하다 (대장장이가 쇠가 뜨거울 때 내려치는 형상)  

<예문>

• We can never anticipate opportunities like this. I say we strike when the iron is hot. (◀ I say : 나는 ~하는게 맞다고 봐) 

 

4. Keep one's head down : 묵묵히 자기가 할 일을 하다 ('다른 사람에게 피해를 주거나 문제를 일으키는 대신' 이라는 느낌 가미, To try to avoid trouble or involvement in difficult or dangerous situation) 

<예문>

• No, I think I've already caused enough trouble. I think I'm just going to keep my head down for a while.
• When he gets a chance of winning, he keeps his head down and really goes for it. 

 

5. Lie low : 몸을 사리다 (자신의 건강/웰빙/안위 등을 위해◀ 4번과 느낌이 다름, To hide or not to draw attention to yourself)

<예문>

• It may seem safe right now but it's very unpredictable and I think we should lie low for a while. 
• Trump isnt' likely to lie low post exit. (하아..ㅋㅋ)
• Far from lying low, Katie became more outspoken than ever. 

 

6. The dust settles : 상황이 진정되다 (◀After the dust settles/ Before the dust settles 로 응용 가능) 

<예문>

• There's just too much happening right now. After the dust settles, I'm sure things will be much clearer. 
• Healthcare stocks rise as election dust settles. (◀응용 ~ dust settles)
• As dust settles on chaos in D.C., accounting begins in Southern California. (◀응용 As dust settles on ~)
